Is this it?

So I guess this is it you guys. We have nothing more to say to each other, class is over, and our portfolios are only about 13 hours from being due. So apart from all that, are we all just going to leave our blogs alone and post nothing? I propose that we all at least post once a week from now on just to give an update to everyone else how they're doing (if Prof. Scott doesn't delete us all!). We'll see how well this goes, and I'm not saying I will post once a week, just everyone at least give it a shot.

See you guys!

P.s. Those bagels in class were really good, thanks Grete!

Last couple classes...

These last couple classes are shooting by very quickly. The end of the semester has come and now there is nothing to do but to finish our portfolios and return home. But before class is actually over I want to get a scope out on what everyone thought of this class. To me, it ran around all the stereotypes of an English class. We didn't read books, we didn't just write essays one after another in a monotone boring way: we created our portfolios with several assignments that together come and create a group of works that will flow well together. English class is forever changed because of this college freshman English class. Who thought we would be free to choose what to write on and how to write it. The limits were endless and we hardly had any rules to regulate us. That is why I loved this class.

Plan for Friday

So other than bringing copies of our actual portfolios, what are we doing in class tomorrow morning? I guess we are going to read our reviews and then peer review again? Whatever we do I just want to read as many portfolios as possible to see what other people have done. I like getting a scope to what the class is doing and what I am doing that compares.

Mark's portfolio

Reading Mark's work is not only fascinating but is interesting as well. His portfolio offers a sense of belonging into the Virginia Tech community. He talks about the soccer team, school spirit, and getting together as one. The way his words appeal to the audience reveal his mastery of pathos, and his logistical claims reveal his use of ethos.

Any particular blog

Is there any particular blog that I have posted up on the website that anybody especially likes? I would like to place it into my portfolio.

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Its been a long while coming...

Over break I had time to think about the portfolio and what it concerns to us. The portfolio is a culmination of our entire semester's work. While putting the actual portfolio together it seems like it will be much harder than I anticipated. Putting together our essay and our project requires thinking and time. We will see how they turn out tomorrow.

On a different note, the presentations last class were very good. I especially liked listening to the stories of the disabled children, it was a touching story. Abel's website was also very well thought through and well designed.

Presentation

Thank you all for the feedback whoever did that for me (especially to Mark who can't even write!). I felt like my presentation today went well and I hope you guys all liked the Oral Health examination survey I made for you all. What I wish I did better throughout the presentation was allow you all more time to read the slides. I was going very fast through it and I did not realize that time was cut so short and that you all couldn't read what was going on. I hope you liked the presentation though, I spent a good amount of time putting that powerpoint together with the help of Missouri's dental education program. Another thing I wish I did better was actually practice more going through it at home. I get shy when I come in front of a group of people so in order to counteract that I need to crack jokes or make people smile, hopefully I did. Out of the presentations we had today I thought everyone did a fantastic job, can't wait to see the others.

Feedback on Letter

I edited my letter to Crest and I am currently working on my presentation for class tomorrow. I chose to do the oral presentation because I believe that would be the best way to present my project. The feedback Mrs. Scott send via email to us was a change from the past feedbacks in that she did not specifically go through the document but she did send us comments specific to the paper. She talked about specific points and I believe this was very helpful, for instance she told me to fix the end of my letter where it goes off on a tangent and make it more specific towards what my point is.

Letter to Crest

So for my initiating action project I wrote a letter to Crest requesting dental supplies and asking them for help...here it is.

ATTN: Crest Oral Health and Healthy Smiles Program

To Whom It May Concern:

Did you know that flossing adds 6.4 years to your life? That is one of the questions we will randomly ask students while crossing our stand, with your help. This is Kayvan Shahrzad, a freshman at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, concerned about the health of his schoolmates. Although this may be my first semester here, it has struck me with great force the oblivious nature of the students here about their oral health. I just want to make it known across campus of several basic needs to maintain oral health. I am writing this letter in order to ask your conglomerate to sponsor a school wide oral health ‘renovation.’ I want to be the head of a program targeted at students to focus on their dental and oral health – I want to provide them with information, products, and let them go with a smile. Through the information I will spread awareness about general dental health, oral diseases, oral cancer, and how to maintain daily health. I as well as a panel of dentists that will compile the information going to be provided in a packet and with anticipation, they will give it a seal of approval. The products, which I am asking for help providing for, will inspire students to brush, floss, and maintain their dental health while at school. An extra or even new toothbrush will help dental health immediately since most of the toothbrushes students use are overused anyway. I will put together a group of students who will take turns to attend the “Crest Oral Health” stand in the middle of the most crowded and most walked through area of Virginia Tech, the “drillfield.” At the stand we will confront students with questions about oral health and ask them to take a survey, if they are still interested at that point we will provide more information about dental health and then give them a free sample toothbrush including toothpaste and floss. With the sample toothbrush and other tools students will be given the chance to at least give their oral health a thought. As long as students even give their teeth a thought, then what we did was successful. So please, I am asking your company to provide my cause atleast 2,000 toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, mini floss packets, and Crest brochures to be handed out to students. That is a good portion of the population of the school (about 10%). Your company would be responsible for helping more than 2,000 students focus more on their oral health and keep our school healthy.

Genre

For my initiating action project, I was going to hand out oral health products to students on campus to spread awareness about having a healthy mouth. In order for me to accomplish something like this, I would first need the materials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, etc. These materials would be hard to purchase individually without the help of others, but what would be the more practical decision would be to actually write a letter to companies such as Delta Dental, Crest, Colgate, or the American Dental Association. These companies actually have programs that are focused on spreading awareness about oral health that would be most likely to respond to my communication. The way I will communicate to the chosen company would be in the form of a persuasive, editorial, yet factual letter containing why I would need these products, how I would distribute them, and why I am actually qualified to do this in the first place. Usually people that want to initiate action start with writing letters to places in which they cannot physically go to and talk to someone in person. Usually this means dealing with some sort of huge conglomerate that is not concerned with the petty issues of one individual. That is why specificity is key: you must research and figure out which specific person that works for that company will suit your needs. This is why research is important in my genre of finding an individual who will read my letter and respond in a timely fashion. Hopefully these companies have made it easy to find someone in there that would be able to help me out. Freedom is limited, if my letter does not specify what exactly I want to do with what I am asking for, they will simply write a sorry letter in return. If my letter meets all their qualms and needs the first time it is sent, then they will have nothing to worry about.

Initiating Action

So for my initiating action project I am going to spread dental awareness. I will do this through handing out toothbrushes, floss, and toothpaste to students in a few particular classes. In class you all had a few great ideas, and if anybody has an extra tooth costume, I will wear it! The audience of my project is going to be Virginia Tech students, and the purpose of my project is to spread awareness of dental problems and how common they are amongst the American population. However, I still to order the toothbrushes and the other materials that are required to do so. I will do this through Delta Dental, who will hopefully sponsor my project and give me a couple boxes of toothbrushes for free.

Essay Feedback

In Professor Scott's feedback, I had realized exactly what I had done wrong in my essay. In my introductory and conclusion sentences for each paragraph, I did not make it clear as to where I wanted to lead the stream of ideas next.
For example, the part of my essay about Mohammed, I gave too much information instead of leading the reader to think for themselves. I told too many stories, and because I did that, I did not have enough time to explain exactly what each story meant to the dental office as a whole.
In my revision for the final portfolio, I will go into making each sentence clearer and expanding on my stories. That is one way I will also be able to meet the page requirements.

Initiation of Action

I have found a couple things on campus that relate to the topic of the initiation of action but there is not a plausible material that I can bring into class that shows this other than a flyer which I will bring. On another topic, this initiation of action can be in many forms. I have received several emails calling me to action of some sort, and not to mention the millions of text messages that I get to go vote. This whole year was a call to action...

Essay

After completely writing my essay, and then writing the cover letter in class yesterday, it was much harder than I anticipated to decide what my audience and purpose of the essay were to be. Especially since she said if you had more time to add to the essay, I was thinking how purpose and audience could change. Although my audience and purpose remained the same throughout the process I think that it is subject to change if more time were put into the essay -- specificity would increase and audience would decrease.

First Flurry and Essay

As the freezing weather is lurking on Virginia Tech like a storm cloud, we are all sitting here in the cold figuring out what to do with our essays. As I sit in front of the computer screen and read over my essay again and again, I seem lost about what to do next. I know I want to add something and not just edit what I have right now. What helped me get past this huge slump today was Skye's comments on my essay. These personalized letters really help you understand what the bigger picture is in your essay and what needs to be fixed so that the reader will have a better perception of what you are writing about. It was flurrying out this morning so I think that has to be a good sign of things to come for the winter season. Essay writing really wasn't all that bad. The splitting of the process into steps such as introduction, shitty essay, edits, and final really help put the writing process into perspective.

Groups

I like the fact that we split up into new groups for this assignment. I think it would be productive and more efficient in editing and proofreading of the essays if we stayed in these groups for the essay assignment because then people that have the same style of writing may read each others' papers without having to focus too much on design of the essay. With the new groups we can create criteria for editing which will help the final copy be much more like the 'essay' we defined in class today.

Encountering MY Essay

Although it may seem as if my essay needed a major amount of work, in the eyes of the authors of these two pieces, it seems like it went right along with what they were trying to convey. My essay is more of a nonfictional piece describing an experience. They said specifically that it is very hard to define what constricts essays to the english language. Actually, I think it fits more along the imaginative modern American essays. My voice really pops through the page and thats what I was aiming for. What I can improve upon in the essay though is again what I went over in my last posts and fixing up the structure so that it fits among these forms of writing.

Shy Class

What am I doing well:
-Storytelling – really puts the reader into the story and makes them feel involved in the happenings
-Use of adjectives – allows the reader to be part of the situation by imagining it as close to its actuality
-Describing the people by way of showing the reader how they act – they do not need to come to the dental office for me to tell them exactly how everyone is

What doesn’t work and why:
-Paragraph structure and length – I think it is going to end up being too long, an essay that is short enough to read within five minutes is one that will captivate your audience more than one that is lengthy.
-Sentence structure – everything is simple and compound sentences as of now, I need to put some of those together to create more complex forms of sentences.
-Direction – I do not know where to go with the story after everyone is described, I don’t know what the final point is going to be.
-Thesis – do we need a thesis? How would I implement a thesis into the story?

Audience and Purpose:
After having written this draft has the purpose or audience changed from last week to now? Articulate who or what your audience has become and if your purpose has changed please describe.
Yes, my audience seems to have changed. Rather than using middle-class society as my audience I am directing this story right at our class. This essay is not meant to be published in some journal or online in a blog that over a million people visit a day, this essay was meant to be read by my classmates and Professor Scott. It would be much easier to revise it with those people in mind rather than middle-class America. Although the audience has changed, the purpose has not. I still believe that the purpose of my essay is to describe to you all what happens in a dental office behind the scenes.

Up-draftability:
What needs to be changed in order for me to fix this essay up is what else I need to write into it needs to be added, then as I start revising I need to fix paragraph and sentence structure to make it look and feel like a final draft. After doing so I may start my edits.

Comments on Research Proposal

After reading Mrs. Scott's comments on the research proposal I have realized how real these proposals actually need to be. All those details that I thought I could pass by like not writing my email and number on the cover sheet were covered by her. The comments provide the specificity in the guidelines that were not as clear when we started the assignment. Such things as capitalization of certain words such as dentist and being more specific in the methods section will really help me edit this and make it become more complete when the final portfolio is due. This type of one on one feedback really helps me understand what I did wrong and how to fix it, I certainly like it and when I am editing my whole proposal for submission in the final portfolio, I will understand what to fix as it is clearly stated right in front of me.

No Homework

No homework? Wow this is a sudden surprise...but it comes as no wonder looking at the next three weeks and seeing as how much work we have to do in such a little time. These essays are no joke, and to include research and our community in them is just going to make the task harder, but a few research ideas for everyone:

The library's search databases are Godlike...use them.
Google is okay, but the library databases are better.
Use the library databases...we didn't spend 2 classes there for nothing. The university spends thousands upon thousands of dollars a month just to keep the subscriptions going, so we should definitely take advantage.

So are they?

Even my first impressions of "Stunt Pilot" were proved correct. The title gave it away -- I do not think the Stunt Pilot is an essay, it seems more like a literary narrative rather than an author's work trying to prove something. Annie Dillard goes through her story and uses adjectives often and her story basically describes her experience as if she is a journalist. Ali in Havana IS written by a journalist. It is in the same tone of writing and it follows the same pattern. Although it is not as story-like as Stunt Pilot, it still is given in a sense of story-telling. Journalistic writing is very similar to narrative in that journalists try to tell a story without being involved in it, they try making it seem as if you are there. I do not know whether there is a point trying to be made by this assignment but to my current views and standards, none of these works so far seem to be an actual essay. Although essays do not always have to be analytical, I still am critical of these pieces being essays.

What Makes Them Essays

What makes these three 'works' essays? To do that, what we must first do is define an essay. An essay is, as the dictionary states, an analytic or interpretive literary composition; a short literary composition dealing with a single subject usually written from the personal point of view of its author. Now that we have the definition of what the dictionary thinks an essay is, I am going to analyze it myself. I write essays, I write long, exhausting, works on pieces of literary merit. An essay begins with an introduction with a thesis that routes where the rest of the work is leading. Last year in AP Lit, I wrote probably 10 deeply analytic essays -- I despised every single one, most likely because my teacher was very specific with her guidelines and left no room for freedom other than writing topic. But anyway, now that the definition of an essay is given to the reader, we can now analyze The Stunt Pilot, Ali in Havana, and Silent Dancing.

Last Question

The last question on the cover letter that was due to Professor Scott herself was very inspiring. If we had more time to do our research proposals, what would we improve upon as a whole in the report? I said that if we had more time to do this that I would go into detail financially and figure out what exactly I do need to test whether flossing adds years to one's life, calculate the total, then ask the ADA and Delta Dental for a specific amount of money. That would be the best idea I would have other than expanding the methodology section and making it a little longer.

Essay Writing

I'm now thinking about what we are going to do after these research proposals. I remember Mrs. Scott saying something about essay writing...seems fun...

Final Touches

I'm putting the final touches on this research proposal and it seems as if I could actually submit this to ADA or Delta Dental and get some $$$$....

Class of September 29, 2008

1. Audience
The audience is an agency that we are supposed to be writing to -- In my case, the company that provides research funding for dentistry is mostly the American Dental Association (ADA) and Delta Dental Group.

2. Outline
- Background
- Abstract
- Objectives
- Justification
- Project design
- Scope
- Expected outcomes
- Limitations
- Justification for outcomes
- Conclusion

3. Connecting sentence (may require change and integration of site visits, etc)
I am still confused about the connecting sentence but as I get a scope of it I will edit this post to contain it.

Literature Review

Looking at my literature review in class, I think that it is more of an illustrating forwarding of a text. The reason I think it is illustrating is because I already know information about the field and I've been involved in it. I "look to other texts for examples of a point I want to make" in order for their examples to extend upon my knowledge and ideas.

Hiatus

Sorry for the long time in between posts lately, I have been busy studying for several exams...the part I do not like about college. However, the library today was a good change of pace. I'm starting to like research because with the Addison tool it is so easy to find whatever you want. And with one click, you can request a book from across the country -- which I have no idea why they call ILLiad when its just inter-library-loan...maybe they wanted it to sound cooler and bring Homer into it? I don't know...oh Virginia Tech librarians...

Research Proposals

Very long, but detailed and intricate. A little too long to read, but there are sections like vocabulary, etc.

On the complete other side, heres a very short one thats to the point and you know what the experiment was about in a couple seconds.

First exam

Is tomorrow! Chemistry right after English.

Interview

For my interview, I'm going to be talking to a couple different people. The first set comes from the Dental Club of Virginia Tech, second is a dentist that works at the NRV Clinic, third is the coordinator of the NRV Clinic's relationship with Tech students, and finally a dentist back home.

So far I've talked to the dentist back home over the phone (face to face interview is still pending) and I've talked to the Dental Club students -- both leaders and members. What I want to know is why people like the field of dentistry and whether that relates to my reason. I think it would be a good angle on my project if I were to put student responses in my paper as well as professional.

New Music

New songs I've been listening to:

TI's new album - PaperTrail
TI - Swagga Like Us
Duffy - Mercy
Kevin Rudolph - Let It Rock (Feat. Lil Wayne)
Mickey Avalon - My Dick (Funny One)

Course Goals

1) I want to be more specific in my writing. Specificity is the key to a good paper; hopefully research will help me accomplish this task.

2) I want to be more stringent with managing my time, with the course already planned out and due dates already set, this is already helping me accomplish this goal.

3) I want to become more organized in my school work. Things like Google Reader and the 3-week outlines really help me do this.

4) I know that this course may not be verbal communication but I would love to improve upon my communication skills and learn how to effectively get my point across to a large group of people with minimal effort.

Dentist Questions

1) When and where did you attend dental school?

2) What influenced you to become a dentist?

3) What is the hardest part of your job?

4) People say dentistry is 40% business and 60% medicine, would you think this statement proves to be true?

5) If you were to tell me one thing I should know about dentistry right now that you wish you knew in the past, what should I know?

6) What makes a good dental office collaboration?

7) What was the worst dental case you have seen and how did you approach it?

8) What did dental school leave out that you constantly run into in your daily work?

9) What classes should I take that may come to use in the future for this work?

10) How often do you brush and floss your teeth?

11) Is it true that flossing adds years to your life?

I'M A GEEK!!!!

It wasn't too long ago when cool kids got all the attention. Zach Morris was smashing Kelly, Lisa, and made Jesse a stripper. Ferris Beuler took the day off. It used to be cool to be cool.

Now...hahah its just funny to think about. GEEKS RULE THE EARTH!!

You know...those geeky kids that sit in the front of class, raise their hands all the time, and ate glue during recess. Got picked last in all the games, and played Oregon Trail ALL THE TIME.

Well that kid liked Oregon Trail so much that he started making his own computer programs, and made SEVENTY BILLION DOLLARS -- Bill Gates, he would be the Geek-in-Chief.

Or those other two kids, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. While everyone else was getting laid in college and playing beer pong and running around, they stayed at home and played math games and actually took the time and figured out what algorithms were, now THEY OWN GOOGLE, with a 24 BILLION DOLLAR NET WORTH.

Or the Geekiest kid of all, the one who made us all losers. Mark Zuckerberg the undergrad computer programmer who spent days and nights wondering how to be popular, and have his face seen around campus because no one knew his name. But now we all know Facebook, and he knows what its like to be worth 3 BILLION DOLLARS.

I don't know about you guys but I'm definitely going to be a geek in college.

Are A Girl's Best Friend; Are Forever; Lucy in the Sky with; With A In The Back

The day was coming to a close at the Alexandria office. Dr. Kam, 31, asks Jocelyn and Genet to give him the reports. The lights slowly started turning off, except for one of the Operating rooms in the back. The girls (Genet and Jocelyn, including the hygienists and assistants) all leave soon after one another. The office is empty except for me and the doctor. From what I thought, Jocelyn had forgotten to turn off room three’s lights so I went back there to flick the switch and to my surprise I saw a tray of instruments laying there; the room was set up for one more patient. I quickly turned around and went to Kam’s office where I asked him why room three was set up. He then told me we had one more patient to take care of. I brushed it off, and continued doing my chores around the office like setting up the new computers and organizing files. After about six months in an office, some things become routine, but today things went out of the usual cycle.

After finishing his papers, Kam came around and told me to put my goggles, mask, and jacket on. Mohammed was here. At first glance he looked like any other person; but after examining him for a second as he passed me by going towards the operating room, his right arm looked quite white as compared to his very dark left arm. His pinstripe, button-up-shirt read Cadillac on a patch over his heart with his name written below. As Kam was preparing the materials for the procedure, I sat there patiently waiting for him to tell me what to do. As I looked even closer at Mohammed, I realized that his right hand was actually a prosthetic. Even closer I looked at Mohammed and things started coming together.

His English accent was poor; it seemed as if he had just come to America within the past couple of years. As Kam started applying the Novocain to Mohammed’s mouth, I handed Mohammed a pair of goggles to put on. For some odd reason the goggles would not stay straight on his face, they were leaning up and becoming crooked every time we adjusted them. We moved on. After waiting a couple minutes for the numbness to settle in, Mohammed opened wide and flashed his, ‘pearly whites.’ Although not so pearly, we began to drill on tooth number three, Mohammed had a large cavity that had to be removed, otherwise it would hit the root ending and he would require a root canal. Dr. Kam all of a sudden handed me the drill after fully informing me of the situation – introducing me as Dr. Kayvan also helped the circumstances. I only allowed myself to drill the tooth for less than ten seconds before I took my foot off the pedal and handed the drill back to the doctor. He continued the operation and successfully removed the entirety of the caries that were in his mouth. I was still wondering, though, how this man had no hand or ear.

After the procedure was done, Mohammed got up and thanked the doctor very earnestly. He left the office without signing anything or looking at any papers. I then asked the doctor who this mystery man was. He told me the story. Mohammed came from Sierra Leone, Africa a couple years ago. He had nothing with him, no money, no family, and no luck. He was taken upon Dr. Kam as a charity patient because Mohammed had no money to pay for any of the tens of thousands of dollars of mouth work needed.

Mohammed is a part of every one of us. Every time we go into the mall he is in those stores that are conveniently located on almost every corner next to department stores. He is part of your family, part of any awards show, and part of any special event. He was a blood diamond worker in Africa for his whole life – they cut of his hand and his ear because of the line of work he was involved in. I bet he’s part of at least one of us. Now tell me, next time you see a diamond, will you think of Mohammed? I will.

Friday's Class

Truth is what you want it to be. As for me, truth encompasses only those facts that are written and widely accepted -- yet this brings up something much larger than truth -- Religion. How does a person believe something that happened over 2000 years ago and the only thing that took account of it is a single book. Who knows. But going back to truth -- if a tree falls in a forest miles away and there is no one to hear it fall, does it make a sound? Different people will have different answers to the same question which just ends up making everything more complicated than it should be. Our group was fairly uniform in our answers and we basically all thought of the same things for the questions answered in class. As the class goes on, however, I believe we will soon learn that not all of us will agree and it is then where the truth will be uncovered.

Politics? Maybe?

Hey just to let you all know: I'm not political at all and not affiliated with any political parties, or haven't been more than slightly interested in government class. However:

Is it just me or does Obama-Biden sound a lot like Osama Bin Laden?
- Doesn't someone get paid to think of these things before hand?
Is it just me or is Sarah Palin hot?
It it just me or does McCain remind you of Darth Vader (especially when he was dying and they opened his suit up)?
Is it just me or does Obama and McCain both have extremely large heads?
Is it just me or is the GOP full of HOT girls? (Including McCain's wife, daughter, and the Bush's)
Is it just me or did the democratic convention have a lot of random gay guys?
Is it just me or no matter who wins in the election in November, my country Iran is in trouble?

Official

So my official topic for my research project is going to be my experience at dental offices, more specifically my future experience that I'm going to be doing at the NV Dental Clinic? in Blacksburg. This is going to be interesting...when I think of this free clinic in Blacksburg, being from NOVA, I imagine farmers with no teeth and rotting gums because of chewing tobacco. Is that what everyone else imagines? Haha

Lost my notebook

Oh great...I lost something else. I'm one of those people who tends to forget things EVERYWHERE. Anywhere I go I have to leave something and today I just now realized I left my notebook with everything in it, in Chemistry Lab. Now I have to run there and look around for my little red notebook. Wish me luck.

Math Empo

So I'm sitting in the Math Empo right now and just finished another agonizing six question quiz on elementary calculus. I have taken Calculus before in high school and some of the questions were just too simple to be solved the way the lesson taught us...when I asked my teacher if I was allowed to take the derivative of the problem instead of finding the limit she started yelling at me how I was not following the rules. I then replyed back with a 'Thank you' while she was mid sentence and she continued to yell. Another day in the life of Kayvan...
